Last night, after I got home from the Phillies game, I picked up the latest issue of Philadelphia Magazine (which we have delivered here at the ‘ol Wolfe homestead) and found an article about the Philly duo “Secret Service”. This summer marks 30 years that they’ve been together and the article talks about how they’ve become Jersey Shore icons over this time period – it’s pretty cool…but that’s not the point of this story. So, as I’m reading this I’m thinking to myself that it’s interesting (ok, maybe not interesting…but at least odd) that I’ve been playing on the same scene as these guys for about 18 (including all the bands I’ve been in) of the 30 years they’ve been together but have only crossed paths with them once. It was last summer at the OD…and I remembered that I even mentioned it in my weekly (or sometimes semi-weekly) post. Now, in all honesty, in the time between playing that show and reading this article, I don’t think “Secret Service” has crossed my mind even once (no offense at all to them…I’m sure we haven’t crossed their minds either)…and after putting the magazine down, I didn’t give any of it much more thought. Then today, as I sat down to write what it is that you are reading right now, I was overcome with the feeling that summer was almost over – I thought “maybe that’s what I should write about”. But then, I thought better of it…figuring it was still too early and that riff would be better used after the last big holiday weekend of the season – but that’s not the point of this story either. As I sat thinking about what to write, I thought “hey, why don’t I go back in the archives and see what I wrote last year around this time!” So, I went back to the post from 8/22/11. The subject was “Ten Observations From The Weekend”…below I have cut and pasted numbers 4 and 10 from the list I wrote one day shy of one year ago today…
10. If you squint real hard as you look off into the distance you can, just about, see it coming as it picks up speed. See it? Know what it is? It’s the end of summer…and it’ll be here soon.
