Forgive me if there are any mistakes or typos in this entry…it’s difficult to type from the “Tebow Pose”. How ’bout that kid huh? I know they say that God loves everyone equally but…c’mon…he must love Tim just a little more equally than everyone else right? And why shouldn’t he?…Hell, (I mean Heck…sorry Tim) I love the kid and I didn’t even have a hand in creating him (God does have hands right?…Oh yeah, “created in his likeness” etc. etc.). Anyway, what I don’t understand is how much Tebow-hate there is out there. My favorite local sports-talk radio host, for instance, speaks of Tebow with such vitriol, that it’s actually insulting to my intelligence when he tries to claim that he doesn’t hate the kid – even though he, not only admits that it “annoys him” when he wins, but he can’t even give any credit to the kid when he does win…he just continues to endlessly point out his short-comings and gleefully bring up his 3 game losing-skid at the end of the season (while completely ignoring his 6 or 7 game win-streak prior – as if no other QB has ever lost 3 games in a row) and says things like “I guarantee any success he has will be temporary” or “I just don’t get why so many people like him and want to see him do well – why does anyone care?”. To say you “don’t get” why people like this kid, is to say you “don’t get” why people like Rocky, Hoosiers, or Rudy. And to say that he’s not an underdog because he was such a great collegiate player (which is another one of this host’s rants) is being a revisionist historian – even when he was setting records and winning championships and Heisman Trophies at Florida, everyone said his skills would never translate to the next level (unless he was willing to change positions to H-back or Tight-end)…in that regard, he has always been an underdog. Look, it’s likely that the ride is over this week against The Patriots (but, to be fair, there are only about 3 or 4 teams in the league that would be favored in that match-up) and there is still a better than good chance that he won’t be a long-term success at QB in the NFL – but why can’t we hope and root for better for this kid…for us (as sports fans) to see something unlikely…for a true Cinderella-story for someone who seems to deserve it? I know the hype can get annoying…but it’s not his fault. If you don’t like the whole “Tebow Thing”, then (as Chris Berman said) you probably don’t like Peanut Butter and Jelly. I, for one, love Peanut Butter and Jelly :o)
